I have always been fascinated by change. It is a force that moves us; we may take it by the reins or be swept away in its current. I grapple with the idea of change and how it creates both beauty and destruction, while challenging us to become the best – or worst – versions of ourselves.
I explore the relationships between human and technology in my piece ‘Integration’ and related works. Our lives today are so entwined with technology that we, in essence, become it. Much like computers possess both mechanical parts and a cloud-based interface, humans consist not only of flesh, but of consciousness; intangible and yet intrinsic. I also examine the dichotomy of our interconnected world. While our dependency on technology may have negative consequences, it also creates greater communication and globalization.
In my ‘Reflections’ print series, I draw from my experiences abroad as an exchange student. Images are quite literally reflected, rotated, superimposed, and changed to create a feeling of longing. The images used are derived from my own photography, and explore a range of techniques from laser-engraved woodblock relief to photo-polymer intaglio pieces.
Color gradients, light, and form become the basis for many of my figurative drawings and paintings, and I continue to explore it in my light-phenomena based triptych “Reflective”. The many ways in which the world is reflected back at us both physically and psychologically through memories, nostalgia and ephemera ties my body of work together.
